Outcast is episode 15 of season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2007.
Sheppard's father is dead, and the colonel returns to Earth as the prodigal son: a distant brother, an ex-wife, the family fortune, everything he ran away from resurfaces between condolences. The mourning is cut short: a human-made Replicator, escaped from a private lab, is on the loose, and Sheppard trades his black suit for an urban manhunt.
Why it matters to the mythology
Sheppard's past on Earth is finally exposed: the Sheppard family, the rift, and what the Atlantis uniform covers up.
The review
The biographical episode Sheppard had been dodging for four years: we discover an heir on the run, a brother keeping the books of old grudges, and a grief with no possible reconciliation; the father died angry. The hunt for the homemade Replicator is a decent pretext, but the essentials lie in Flanigan's silences, very good as a man who missed his goodbyes. Ava, the melancholy android, adds a lovely note. Personal and successful.
