The Real World is episode 6 of season 3 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2006.
Weir wakes up in a psychiatric hospital on Earth: Atlantis, the gate, Pegasus, all of it is supposedly the delusion of a burned-out diplomat, and a patient doctor helps her grieve her imaginary world. The details don't add up, reality cracks, and the truth lies elsewhere: Asuran nanites are colonizing her brain, and the simulation is their battlefield.
Why it matters to the mythology
Weir's first nanite infection: the episode quietly plants the seed that will decide the character's fate.
The review
The great rigged-reality classic, applied to the best candidate: Weir, whom everyone has been whispering for two seasons is carrying too much weight. Torri Higginson is remarkable as a woman being gently pushed to disown her own life, and Sheppard's appearance as a stubborn projection nicely expresses the bond between the two characters. The nanite mechanism behind the scenes lifts the episode above a mere exercise in style. Solid and insidious.
