Underground is episode 8 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
First contact with the Genii: placid farmers, full granaries and cautious smiles... until McKay and Sheppard fall into a camouflaged silo. Beneath the wheat fields lies a military complex: the farmers are a cover, and the Genii a clandestine nuclear power that has been preparing its revenge against the Wraith for sixty years.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Genii reveal themselves: the first rival human power in Pegasus, an impossible ally and a lasting enemy.
The review
The twist of the atomic farmers remains one of the series' best reversals: in one climb down a ladder, Pegasus gains a geopolitics. The Genii are the missing idea, humans who are neither victims nor saints, paranoid and calculating, shaped by Wraith terror into an underground junta. The joint mission that turns into a fiasco, with Tyrus left to the Wraith, opens a dispute that will bleed for a long time. Foundations laid with a sure hand.
