Poisoning the Well is episode 7 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
The Hoffans have a forbidden dream: a serum that makes human blood toxic to the Wraith, a recipe handed down by generations of decimated researchers. With Beckett's help, the prototype becomes reality... and so does its downside: the serum kills half of those who receive it. The people vote, and choose voluntary slaughter over eternal livestock.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Hoffan serum is born: this desperate weapon will come back seasons later, with galactic consequences.
The review
Atlantis's first great moral episode: an entire people who would rather die free at fifty percent than live as a herd, and our heroes watching, horrified, a perfectly democratic decision. Beckett, a doctor broken by his own oath, is devastating; his serum saves and kills in the same stroke. The series poses its central question here: how far are we entitled to go against an absolute predator? The answer is left hanging for five seasons. Remarkable.
