Thirty-Eight Minutes is episode 4 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
The team's Puddle Jumper gets stuck halfway through Atlantis's space gate: the front in hyperspace, the back in the bay, and thirty-eight minutes before the wormhole closes on them. Sheppard is dying, a Wraith bug clamped to his neck, while McKay and the engineers gamble everyone's survival down to the last equation.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode of pure mechanics, but it sets the rules for space gates and the series' DNA: ingenuity as the only weapon.
The review
The franchise's definitive chamber piece: a jumper corridor, a clock, and physics as the only villain. In a single episode the series proves it needs neither a fleet nor a god to make its audience gasp; the front half of the ship literally frozen somewhere else is enough. Kavanagh launches his career as a procedural pain in the neck, and Weir settles her first command dilemmas. A model of writing under constraint, sweated out from the first minute to the last.
