Suspicion is episode 5 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
The Wraith find the team on almost every mission: the coincidence is no longer a coincidence, and suspicion, for lack of anything better, turns to the Athosians who have taken refuge in the city. Mistrust poisons the corridors until the truth comes out: Teyla's pendant, a childhood keepsake, is a Wraith transmitter. The Athosians, hurt, choose the mainland.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Athosians settle on the mainland, and the expedition's first fracture of trust leaves lasting scars.
The review
A necessary paranoia episode that dares to show the expedition at its worst: faced with the inexplicable, even the heroes slide toward profiling, and the interrogation of the Athosians is deliberately cringe-inducing. Teyla takes the humiliation with a dignity that elevates the character. The technical resolution, a tracker in a piece of jewelry, is almost disappointingly simple, but the damage is done and the series is smart enough not to erase it. Useful and uncomfortable.
