The gluttonous genius Goa'uld: no army, but an exceptional engineer's brain and a bottomless appetite, at the service of the highest bidder.
Overview
Nerus is the Goa'uld who thinks with his stomach, and that is precisely what makes him dangerous. No fleet, no throne, but a brilliant engineer's mind and a limitless appetite. He sells himself to the highest bidder, plays both sides, and gets himself out of the worst situations through calculation and lies.
History
Where other Goa'uld rely on force, Nerus relies on his intelligence. He is a builder, capable of designing or sabotaging cutting-edge technology, and that is the talent he sells, notably in the service of Ba'al.
But he can never be trusted. He presents himself as an ally, hands over half-true information, and tries to play Earth and his masters against each other, all between two feasts.
Beneath the gluttonous buffoon lies a formidably calculating mind, which ultimately has only one master: his own self-interest.
Origins
Nerus does not embody a great god, but a figure every royal court in the world has known: the adviser in the shadows, the éminence grise who puts his talent at the service of the powerful, and betrays them the moment it suits him.
The expression "éminence grise" comes from a very real figure, Father Joseph, the secret adviser to Cardinal Richelieu in the 17th century. Dressed in a gray habit, with no official title, he nonetheless wielded considerable influence in the shadow of power. Closer to our time, Henry Kissinger was another famous example.
Nerus is its cynical, venal version: intelligence without morality, the scientist who never asks whether he should do something, only how, and above all how much it will pay. A threat more discreet than war fleets, but every bit as corrosive.
