The fallen System Lord, willing to crawl all the way to Earth to survive, a dagger hidden behind his back.
Overview
Camulus is the false god with his back to the wall. The Goa'uld of the Celtic god of war, he watches his empire collapse under the rise of Ba'al. Cornered, he comes all the way to Earth to seek asylum, while keeping his old traitor's habits.
History
When Ba'al crushes his rivals, several System Lords find themselves without a domain. Camulus is part of the delegation that shows up at the SGC to negotiate his survival. The situation is as delicate as it is absurd: it is hard to welcome a false god who, only yesterday, would have enslaved Earth without a moment's hesitation.
And true to his nature, Camulus does not merely ask for help. He tries to use Earth as a weapon against Ba'al, even if it puts all of us in danger along the way.
A weakened enemy is still an enemy: that is the lesson the SGC takes from this episode, sending him back where he came from.
Origins
Camulus is inspired by Camulos, a god of war worshipped by the Celtic peoples of Gaul and Britain, especially among the tribes of present-day Belgium and northern France.
A warrior deity par excellence, he was so important that the Romans identified him with their own god of war, Mars. His name, linked to an old word meaning "champion," even left its mark on geography: the town of Camulodunum, "the fortress of Camulos," is none other than present-day Colchester, in England. He was depicted wearing a helmet, sometimes topped with ram's horns.
A god of battle and conquest: a prestigious legacy for a Goa'uld who, as fate would have it, ends up a refugee without an army, reduced to begging for protection from those he despised.
