Subversion is episode 18 of season 1 of Stargate Universe, first aired in 2009.
Rush catches, in former Colonel Telford's thoughts, a memory that should never have been there: betrayal. Via the stones, the Lucian Alliance sleeper agent is unmasked, and the interrogation crosses every red line: Young literally suffocates the truth out of Telford. Back in the home galaxy, the Alliance is preparing its assault on a new Icarus planet.
Why it matters to the mythology
Telford deprogrammed through controlled death, the Lucian invasion imminent: the outside world catches up with Destiny.
The review
A spy episode of deliberate harshness: Lucian brainwashing, torture by asphyxiation as shock therapy, and a Young willing to kill a man to save him. The franchise had never pushed its heroes this far into the gray. Lou Diamond Phillips finally gets the part Telford deserved, a traitor despite himself and everyone's guinea pig. The table is set for a war finale. Merciless and effective.
