New Order (Part 2) is episode 2 of season 8 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2004.
To save O'Neill, Thor plugs the frozen colonel's brain into his ship: the knowledge of the Ancients designs an anti-Replicator weapon in real time, the disruptor. Fifth escapes with a monstrous trophy: a Replicator copy of Carter, steeped in her memories. On Earth, a revived O'Neill, emptied of Ancient knowledge, gets the surprise of his life: a general's stars and command of the SGC.
Why it matters to the mythology
The disruptor is born, and so is RepliCarter; O'Neill takes the SGC, Carter takes SG-1: the new order is in place.
The review
The conclusion reorganizes the whole series with formidable efficiency: a new weapon, a brand-new intimate enemy, and a promotion that changes the team dynamic for good. O'Neill as a general is the end of an era and the start of an excellent administrative running gag. The creation of RepliCarter, halfway between identity theft and memory violation, promises cold sweats. Season 8 gets off to a flying start.
