The Other Guys is episode 8 of season 6 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2002.
Two SGC scientists, the eccentric Dr. Felger and his sidekick Coombs, watch SG-1 get captured before their eyes... and decide, against all orders, to mount a two-man rescue operation. The catch: the capture was voluntary, the team is on an undercover mission, and the two weekend heroes have just compromised everything. Or have they?
Why it matters to the mythology
A comedy episode with no mythological stakes: the series' gift to every fan who dreams of being an SGC hero.
The review
Along with "Window of Opportunity," the series' best comedy, seen from the cafeteria: Felger and Coombs are us, the fans, thrown into the episode of their dreams, with one reference too many and all the clumsiness that comes with it. Every genre cliché is quoted and then lovingly turned on its head, and Felger's final fantasy is the absurd cherry on top. Patrick McKenna and John Billingsley are flawless. You laugh from start to finish, and you feel seen.
