Shadow Play is episode 7 of season 6 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2002.
Kelowna calls Jonas home: his planet is on the brink of all-out war, and his former mentor, Professor Kieran, offers to hand naquadria over to Earth in exchange for military support. But the old scientist is hiding a heartbreaking secret: the pacifist resistance he talks about exists only in his mind, eaten away by naquadria radiation.
Why it matters to the mythology
The human cost of naquadria becomes clearer, and Jonas cuts the cord with Kelowna for good: his place is with SG-1.
The review
A political fiction episode that tips into intimate tragedy: Professor Kieran's phantom revolution is a finely cruel twist, madness as the only refuge for a man with too much blood on his conscience. Jonas finally gains dramatic depth, torn between two worlds that each consider him a traitor. A shame the Kelownan storyline stays visually rather gray. The substance is excellent.
