Smoke & Mirrors is episode 14 of season 6 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2002.
Senator Kinsey is gunned down in the street, and the assassin caught on camera is Jack O'Neill. The colonel protests his innocence from his cell while Carter follows the trail of a mimetic camouflage technology stolen from the Reetou, and of an NID cell ready to do anything to regain control. Including bringing a dead man back.
Why it matters to the mythology
The NID is decapitated all the way to the top, Kinsey sadly survives, and the series closes the first chapter of its inside-conspiracy arc.
The review
A good framed-man thriller, classic mechanics but well oiled, where the fun mostly comes from the supporting players: Agent Barrett switching to the right side, Kinsey surviving his own assassination attempt and coming out of it politically stronger, a delicious irony. The mimetic masks offer some tasty body-double scenes. Without reinventing the genre, the episode beefs up the series' political backdrop.
