Paradise Lost is episode 15 of season 6 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2002.
Maybourne resurfaces with stolen coordinates: a utopian sanctuary built by the Ancients, promising weapons and wonders. The old fox traps O'Neill, and the two men end up alone, with no way back through the gate, on a deserted paradise where a native plant slowly causes paranoia. Two armed survivors who don't trust each other: the countdown begins.
Why it matters to the mythology
An intimate episode: the O'Neill-Maybourne relationship reaches its peak, somewhere between attempted murder and a strange friendship.
The review
The two-hander the duo had deserved for years. All of Maybourne's ambiguity explodes here: pathetic, endearing, dangerous, he lies even in paradise, and Tom McBeath is masterful. The chemical paranoia that drives two allies to hunt each other through the jungle is a simple, relentless device. And Carter refusing to give up the search for weeks says a lot, once again, without one word too many. One of the season's quiet high points.
