Menace is episode 19 of season 5 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2001.
On a dead world, SG-1 finds a young woman asleep among the ruins: Reese, an android of unsettling perfection, sweet and childlike. Her toys, small metal blocks that replicate themselves, devoured her planet, and the origin of the Replicators is revealed in a doll's smile. When Reese panics, her toys wake up, and the SGC becomes a nursery of the apocalypse.
Why it matters to the mythology
The origin of the Replicators is finally revealed: not a weapon, but the toys of a misunderstood machine child. Dizzying.
The review
The most tragic episode of the season: galactic threat number one was born of an android who just wanted to be loved. The final clash between Daniel, who earns her trust word by word, and O'Neill, who settles it with a bullet, leaves a real fracture in the team, and the series is smart enough not to say who was right. Danielle Nicolet is heartbreaking as Reese. An episode that hurts, on purpose, and for a long time.
