Message in a Bottle is episode 7 of season 2 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1998.
A probe brings back a mysterious sphere, thousands of years old, from a dead world. Back at the SGC, the object wakes up, impales O'Neill through the shoulder and starts colonizing the whole base like a living organism. Stuck in quarantine, the team discovers that the sphere isn't attacking: it's desperately trying to communicate.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode, but the lesson will stick: in this universe, the first question is never how to destroy something, it's how to understand it.
The review
A good old base-under-siege chamber piece, tense and effective, with O'Neill pinned to the wall and still cracking jokes while skewered. The final twist, a threat that was only a dying people looking for refuge, is pure Stargate: the series always prefers dialogue to the flamethrower. Not a high point, but a well-oiled machine that does exactly what it promises.
