A Matter of Time is episode 16 of season 2 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1998.
The gate connects to a world being swallowed by a black hole, and won't shut down: the monster's gravity travels back up the wormhole all the way to the SGC. Time dilates, seconds on the base become hours outside, and the whole mountain starts sliding toward the event horizon. The solution will involve a nuclear charge and an insane physics gamble.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode, but time dilation and the black hole will come back: the series keeps notes on everything and always recycles.
The review
Hard science fiction of the kind TV produces far too rarely: the danger is an equation, and the equation is fascinating. The wormhole that refuses to die, hallways warped by gravity, Cronin the physicist overwhelmed by his own discovery: everything breathes a rare ambition for a 1998 TV budget. Carter definitively earns her status as the brains of the series. A popular-science classic disguised as a disaster episode.
