The Tok'ra (Part 2) is episode 12 of season 2 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1998.
Betrayed by a spy, the Tok'ra base has to evacuate while SG-1 proves its good faith, weapons in hand. Sam plays her last card: offering her own father as a host to Selmak, the oldest and wisest of the Tok'ra. Jacob Carter, dying of cancer, accepts the unimaginable and gets a second life, sealing the alliance between Earth and the resistance in his own flesh.
Why it matters to the mythology
Jacob becomes Jacob/Selmak, Earth's permanent ambassador to the Tok'ra: one of the franchise's best recurring characters is born.
The review
The second part turns diplomacy into pure emotion. The scene where Sam suggests that her dying father merge with a millennia-old alien shouldn't work, and yet Carmen Argenziano and Amanda Tapping make it devastating: it's a father-daughter reconciliation dressed up as science fiction. The final escape is solid, but what stays with you is this: Stargate tells stories about families, and the Carter family just grew by one symbiote.
