Counterstrike is episode 7 of season 10 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2006.
The Free Jaffa have found their counterstrike: Dakara and its superweapon, aimed this time at the crusaders. Se'tak wipes out an entire converted world to kill a single Ori ship, and the cure turns out worse than the disease: Adria seizes the weapon, razes Dakara and decapitates the fledgling Jaffa nation. The freedom won over eight seasons goes up in smoke in forty minutes.
Why it matters to the mythology
Dakara is destroyed, the superweapon with it, and the free Jaffa nation collapses: the Ori win by letting their enemies destroy each other.
The review
The season's most bitter episode: the series methodically demolishes what took it years to build, and the worst part is that every player in the catastrophe has their reasons. Se'tak isn't a monster, just a free man ready to do anything to stay free, and his fall challenges our own moral arsenal. Adria turning the sacred weapon against its guardians is a perfectly cruel irony. We end up stunned, like Teal'c before the ruins. Merciless and necessary.
