Cold Lazarus is episode 6 of season 1 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1997.
Jack O'Neill comes back from a mission... and yet a second Jack stayed behind. A crystal entity has taken his form and discovers on Earth the grief eating away at the real Jack: the death of his son Charlie. A surprisingly moving episode that digs into the colonel's past.
Why it matters to the mythology
Few lasting consequences, but an essential look at O'Neill's defining wound.
The review
On paper it's a gimmick episode: a crystal copy of Jack wandering around Earth. On screen, it's the first time the series dares to go for pure, intimate drama. The fake Jack going to see Sara, looking for Charlie, unable to understand the death of a child: it's heartbreaking. Richard Dean Anderson plays both parts with a precision that floored me back then. Early proof that Stargate would be more than a series of firefights in Canadian forests.
