The Daedalus Variations is episode 4 of season 5 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2008.
A ghost Daedalus appears in orbit, empty and drifting: aboard, the team discovers a ship jumping from reality to reality, its alternate drive running wild, each jump taking it further from home. Universe after universe, Atlantis in flames, an unknown Earth, hostile aliens, the ammunition runs low and so does the power.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: the multiverse roller coaster, Atlantis edition, with a gallery of realities in fast-forward.
The review
The concept of a ship channel-surfing through universes is exploited with pulp gusto: each jump is a postcard from a possible world, including a battle against aliens never seen again that has the scent of deliberate mystery. The power countdown keeps it all disciplined, and the glimpse of an alternate team provides the regulation touch of vertigo. Not a crumb of mythology, one hundred percent series pleasure. An excellent ride.
