The Last Man is episode 20 of season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2007.
Sheppard steps out of a wormhole... into a sand-covered Atlantis, dead for millennia: a solar flare has thrown him forty-eight thousand years into the future. His only companion is a hologram of McKay, the old program of an old man who spent his life preparing for this moment: sending his friend back to the right time to repair history, save Teyla, and prevent Michael's reign.
Why it matters to the mythology
The future of defeat laid out in full, everyone's deaths included: the last-chance roadmap, and a cliffhanger under the rubble.
The review
The season's best episode, and one of the series' most beautiful: this sandy future where everyone is dead tells, through a hologram, the entire life of a Rodney turned stubborn old bachelor, who traded genius for loyalty, fifty years of calculations to win back one second. Each fate recounted, Carter going out as a warrior, Ronon and Todd back to back, wrings the heart. And the return comes at the price of a building collapsing on the team. Season 4 closes on its melancholy masterpiece. Sublime.
