The Kindred (Part 2) is episode 19 of season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2007.
The hunt for Teyla leads from lab to lab, all the way to an impossible figure: Carson Beckett, alive, in a lab coat, working for Michael. A clone, created before the doctor's death and pumped full of serum to stay stable, but with all the original's memory and all his heart. The joy of the reunion runs into the question: what do you do with a friend who comes back as a copy?
Why it matters to the mythology
Beckett's clone rejoins the living, placed in stasis while awaiting a cure: the series gives itself Carson back without undoing his death. Teyla, meanwhile, remains in Michael's hands.
The review
The franchise's riskiest comeback, handled with rare intelligence: the clone doesn't erase the grief of "Sunday", it complicates it, and everyone, Rodney first, has to decide whether love can be transferred to a copy. Paul McGillion plays Beckett again with a new crack, that of a man who knows what he is. His stasis, halfway between farewell and promise, is one more heartbreak. And Michael keeps Teyla. A major, emotionally devious two-parter.
