Search and Rescue is episode 1 of season 5 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2008.
Beneath the rubble of Michael's complex, the team digs itself out, wounded but alive, and the hunt resumes immediately: Teyla, aboard the hybrid's cruiser, gives birth alone to her son Torren, while Sheppard makes his way to her with no regard for his own wounds. The family grows by one baby... born in the jaws of the wolf.
Why it matters to the mythology
Torren John is born mid-escape, and Michael loses his flying lab but gets away: the final season starts with a forceps delivery.
The review
An opener that pays off the cliffhanger without cheating: the rubble costs dearly, the wounds really slow people down, and Teyla's delivery in the engine room, between two firefights, pulls off a very successful mix of brutality and tenderness. Sheppard as a berserker with a punctured abdomen reminds us where the series' heart beats: no one gets left behind. The noose around Michael tightens. A solid restart.
