Sunday is episode 17 of season 3 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2006.
A Sunday of mandatory rest on Atlantis: picnics, rounds of golf, shy dates and general laziness. Then an explosion in a corridor, and the chain of events: an explosive tumor born of a lab accident, a patient to be operated on by hand, and Carson Beckett refusing, as always, to let anyone else take the risk. The good doctor won't be home for dinner.
Why it matters to the mythology
Carson Beckett dies saving a patient: the first major loss in the Atlantis family, and the most unjust.
The review
Atlantis's "Heroes": a gentle chronicle of an ordinary day, built so that the blast takes us the way it takes the city, by surprise and straight to the heart. Paul McGillion made Beckett the series' Scottish soul, and his death, a doctor to his last act, is so consistent that it doubles the grief. The funeral to the sound of bagpipes and Rodney's silent appearance at the end finish me off every time. A magnificent, cruel farewell; finely crafted television.
