The Siege (Part 3) is episode 1 of season 2 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2005.
Sheppard's kamikaze jumper is beamed out at the last moment: the Daedalus has arrived, a ZPM aboard, and the battle changes scale. The hives fall one by one, but the Wraith learn fast, and the only lasting way out is a sleight of hand on the scale of a city: making the galaxy believe Atlantis has been destroyed, and living from now on under a cloak of invisibility.
Why it matters to the mythology
The siege ends: the Daedalus enters service, the city goes into stealth mode, and the link with Earth is restored for good.
First appearance
The Daedalus, Colonel Steven Caldwell
The review
A resolution worthy of two episodes of build-up: Sheppard's rescue in the nick of time remains one of the franchise's great cries of relief, and the tactical turnaround, from beamed warheads to the final bluff of the ghost city, strings ideas together with rare generosity. Caldwell immediately sets up a promising command friction. The series closes its first chapter in great form, richer by a ship and a secret. Impeccable.
