The Siege (Part 2) is episode 20 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
The Wraith rain down on Atlantis: kamikaze Darts, warriors in the corridors, and the shield is gone. Ford falls into the water with a Wraith clamped to his neck, Everett's Marines melt away room by room, and the last card is named Sheppard: a jumper loaded with a nuclear warhead, flown manually, straight for the heart of a hive. The credits roll over his farewell on the radio.
Why it matters to the mythology
The siege reaches its climax and the season ends mid-sacrifice: Sheppard flying toward the hive, the city in flames, everything hanging in the balance.
The review
A total-war finale that holds nothing back: the city invaded room by room, Everett forcibly aged by a Wraith like a reminder of Colonel Sumner, and that monstrous cliffhanger, Sheppard on his way to die, cut to black. Season 1 closes on its purest theme: Atlantis is a magnificent promise that the entire galaxy wants to devour. The wait for season 2 was a small personal torture. Grandiose.
