The Siege (Part 1) is episode 19 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
The hives are closing in, and the defense plan comes down to three desperate acts: reactivate the Ancients' laser satellite, prepare the city's self-destruct, and lie to the Wraith about everything else. The satellite takes down a hive before dying along with its three repairmen, including Dr. Grodin. The fleet keeps advancing, and Earth finally sends reinforcements: a colonel, and orders.
Why it matters to the mythology
The siege of Atlantis begins: Grodin dies with the satellite, Colonel Everett takes command, and the city arms its own suicide.
The review
The season's most oppressive march to the front: every victory costs exactly too much, the satellite obliterates a hive and swallows Grodin in the same breath, and the arithmetic stays relentlessly unfavorable. The arrival of Everett, who sidelines Weir and Sheppard in three sentences, adds human friction to the impending disaster. The series dares the atmosphere of an eve-of-battle vigil, without easy hope. An exemplary first part of a siege.
