Letters from Pegasus is episode 17 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
Two hive ships are heading for Atlantis, and the expedition allows itself a heartbreaking luxury: a wormhole to Earth lasting a few seconds, just long enough to send messages. Everyone records what may be their farewells, while Sheppard and Teyla, out on reconnaissance, watch helplessly as an entire world is culled.
Why it matters to the mythology
Earth is warned of the Wraith awakening, and the culling filmed live finally shows the scale of Pegasus's everyday massacre.
The review
The quintessential clever budget episode, and yet one of the most moving: the video messages form a mosaic of humanity, McKay's endless scientific testament tipping into a confession of loneliness, Beckett and his mother, Sheppard's silence. In counterpoint, the culling seen from the ground, families snatched up in white beams, reminds us what awaits the city. The series takes stock of its first year looking us straight in the eye. Understated and poignant.
