Career
If you've ever grumbled along with Rodney McKay when nothing works in the city of the Ancients, it's Jérôme Rebbot's voice you hear complaining. This French actor, who specializes in dubbing, came to the profession almost naturally, since he comes from an artistic family. He is the son of the actor Sady Rebbot, and his father was also a literature professor, the kind of setting where you can't help but grow up with a taste for words and the stage. Trained by great theater teachers such as Jean-Laurent Cochet, he says he discovered in dubbing the chance to play better roles than the ones he was being offered on TV or in film, and to feel, in his own words, like a fish in water. A detail that still amuses people in the business: at 1.97 m (six foot six), he is said to be one of the tallest dubbing actors in France, quite literally.
You've come across his voice far more often than you think. Jérôme Rebbot is the regular French voice of Christopher Meloni, whom he dubs as Detective Elliot Stabler in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, and also of Jason Segel and Mario López, whose character he voices in Saved by the Bell. In animation, he's also the one who voices B.O.B., the big, gelatinous, slightly dim blob in Monsters vs. Aliens. That ability to go from a tormented cop to a lovable bumbler says a lot about his range, as comfortable with tension as with comedy, which has a lot to do with his bond with Stargate.
Because he is the one who has accompanied David Hewlett in the French version since the very beginning. Jérôme Rebbot dubs the actor as Dr. Rodney McKay across Stargate SG-1 and then Stargate Atlantis, giving this cantankerous genius all his cheek, his biting humor and that very human panic that makes the character so endearing. His partnership with Hewlett didn't stop at the Stargate either: he also dubs the actor in feature films such as Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Shape of Water. Enough to make his voice one of the familiar sounds of the franchise for every French-speaking fan.
