Long before SG-1, a young man stepped through the Stargate in 1945 and never came back. Ernest Littlefield is the first human from Earth to have traveled to the other side.
Overview
Ernest Littlefield holds a special place in Stargate history: it was he, not SG-1, who went through the Stargate first. In 1945, a young researcher engaged to Catherine Langford, he agrees to test the ring unearthed by Catherine's father.
His story
The experiment works, but Ernest finds himself trapped on a distant planet, with no way home. He is believed dead for more than fifty years. In fact, he survives alone in the ruins of a temple holding priceless knowledge, a meeting place where four great races left a message.
When SG-1 finally finds him, aged and all but forgotten by the world, his reunion with Catherine moves the team deeply. Ernest embodies the dizzying side of the program: the Stargate opens up the universe, but it can also swallow a whole life.
