Earth is episode 7 of season 1 of Stargate Universe, first aired in 2009.
Earth wants to take back control: via the communication stones, experts arrive in the bodies of the crew with a plan for getting home that is as brilliant as it is suicidal, draining Destiny's power into a gate. While Young defends his crew against his own chain of command, Eli, Chloe and Scott get a taste of their borrowed lives on Earth... and of everything wrong with them.
Why it matters to the mythology
The stones become the official umbilical cord to Earth, and the first Destiny-versus-brass showdown ends in the ship's favor.
The review
The episode that establishes the series' most original device: these back-and-forth trips of consciousness where you go home in someone else's body, with all the impossible grief and stolen embraces that implies. Rush's plan to sabotage Earth's ambitions says a lot about his realpolitik. And Eli looking at his mother without being able to say "I'm here" catches you off guard. SGU's melancholy finds its definitive form here.
