Human is episode 14 of season 1 of Stargate Universe, first aired in 2009.
Rush sits in the neural interface chair of his own free will: to crack Destiny's master code, he lets the ship search his brain, and relives on a loop the death of his wife Gloria, rearranged by the machine into a mental puzzle. Meanwhile, a team stuck in underground tunnels misses the departure: the ship jumps to FTL without them.
Why it matters to the mythology
Rush's past finally opened up, the master code partially cracked... and four crew members abandoned light-years away.
The review
Rush's great episode: the mental reconstruction of his grief, a kitchen, a blackboard and Gloria dying on a loop, has a staging elegance unprecedented in the franchise, and Robert Carlyle is heartbreaking as a man whose control is cracking. Understanding that his obsession with Destiny is grief in disguise changes the entire character. The cliffhanger of the stranded team adds the house's logistical cruelty. A dramatic high point, understated and brilliant.
