The Ties That Bind is episode 4 of season 9 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2005.
The Kor mak bracelet has been removed, but the link between Daniel and Vala persists: more than a few miles apart, both of them pass out. The solution involves a tour of the galaxy's fences: Vala has to track down the original bracelet, sold, bartered and bartered again through a gallery of crooks, fake monks and swindled ex-lovers.
Why it matters to the mythology
A picaresque episode with no big stakes, but it maps out Vala's shady past and sets up the civilian oversight body that will keep watch over the SGC.
The review
A comic treasure hunt worth watching for its gallery of rogues: each stop reveals a victim of Vala's past scams, and the indirect portrait is delightful; this woman has conned half the galaxy. The grumpy Daniel-Vala tandem keeps striking sparks. It's light, inconsequential, a touch repetitive, but Claudia Black's energy carries everything. A deliberate recess before the serious stuff.
