Collateral Damage is episode 12 of season 9 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2005.
On Galar, people graft memories the way you copy files. Mitchell wakes up with the murder of a scientist in his head: his memory accuses him, every detail is sharp, and yet it's all false. To prove his innocence, the implanted memory has to be dissected, and Mitchell must relive over and over a crime he didn't commit, intertwined with his real ghosts of war.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: a memory thriller that digs into Mitchell's military past and his scars from Afghanistan.
The review
An elegant science fiction mystery, built like a neural Rashomon: the same memory replayed from several angles until the seam that gives way is found. The graft works all the better because it awakens a real trauma in Mitchell, the doctor bombed by mistake that he has carried for years. Ben Browder is excellent in it. The whodunit is classic; the psychological setting lifts it considerably. A pleasant surprise.
