Zero Hour is episode 4 of season 8 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2004.
A week in the life of General O'Neill: a translator on the verge of a nervous breakdown, Bedrosian delegates at each other's throats, an alien plant overrunning the base, Ba'al demanding surrender, and SG-1 missing in action. Jack discovers that Hammond's chair is the most uncomfortable seat in the galaxy, and drafts his resignation letter in his head.
Why it matters to the mythology
A transitional episode that settles O'Neill into his new role: commanding means giving up stepping through the gate, and that comes at a price.
The review
The office comedy Jack's promotion was calling for: watching the man of action drown in memos, carnivorous houseplants and quarrelsome diplomats is a treat of self-mockery. Beneath the farce lies real melancholy, that of the soldier locked in a gilded cage, and Hammond's final wink, sympathizing from afar, neatly closes the loop. Minor for the mythology, major for the character. Delicious.
