Birthright is episode 10 of season 7 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2003.
Jaffa warrior women are taking symbiotes from the dead on a battlefield: SG-1 meets the Hak'tyl, a society of amazons led by Ishta, who for years has been saving the little girls condemned by their Goa'uld lord. Their survival depends on stolen larvae; tretonin could change everything, if trust takes hold. And between Teal'c and Ishta, something else takes hold too.
Why it matters to the mythology
The Hak'tyl join the rebellion and tretonin earns its stripes: the Jaffa's biological independence is under way.
The review
A head-on feminist episode, with ritual infanticide and armed sisterhood on the menu, that avoids becoming a pamphlet thanks to solid characters: Ishta stands up to Teal'c as an equal, and their budding romance has a rare maturity, two battered warriors negotiating their trust. Jolinar would have approved. The tretonin demonstration gives the episode its strategic reach. It's not the season's most spectacular, but it moves three storylines forward at once. Effective.
