Memento is episode 20 of season 6 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2002.
The Prometheus crash-lands on Tagrea, a world that has erased even the memory of its Stargate: their history begins three centuries ago, period, and asking questions is a crime. To get home, the crew has to find the buried ring, and therefore force an entire people to reopen the forbidden chapter of its Goa'uld past.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: a careful variation on peoples' voluntary amnesia and the duty to remember.
The review
A classic but well-handled first-contact episode, where the enemy is neither a monster nor a god, just a state taboo. Commander Kalfas as a hidebound hawk facing an open-minded chairman makes a credible political duo, and digging up the gate offers its little archaeological thrill. Jonas as a cultural mediator finds exactly his place. Nothing to get too excited about, but the craftsmanship is clean and the message honest.
