Scorched Earth is episode 9 of season 4 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 2000.
SG-1 has just resettled the Enkarans, a fragile people, on a world finally compatible with their biology... when a colossal ship starts razing everything in its path, turning the planet into a furnace to seed another form of life. On board, an artificial intelligence is carrying out the last wishes of an extinct species. Two peoples, one planet, and no bad cause.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode, but a founding dilemma: what do you do when two rights to life are incompatible? Daniel's answer will set the standard.
The review
The best moral dilemma of the season: no villain, just two species condemned to share the impossible. O'Neill reaching for the bomb and Daniel going aboard to negotiate with a machine is the beating heart of the series summed up in a conflict between friends. The final solution is almost too neat, but the debate it closes remains spot-on. Stargate with ideas, the kind I love.
