The Gamekeeper is episode 4 of season 2 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1998.
A garden world, inhabitants in stasis, and chairs that plug the mind into a virtual reality: SG-1 falls into the Keeper's trap. O'Neill and Teal'c relive a mission gone wrong on a loop, Daniel the death of his parents, while a crowd of virtual spectators feeds on their traumas. Getting out of the simulator will take more cunning than strength.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode, but it sheds light on two defining wounds: the accident that killed Daniel's parents and O'Neill's guilt as a soldier.
The review
Virtual reality, a rite of passage for '90s science fiction, with a deliciously perverse Dwight Schultz as master of ceremonies. The episode matters less for its twist than for what it reveals: watching young Daniel witness his parents' death over and over is unexpectedly cruel. The resolution, where the team wins simply by refusing to play, is smarter than the genre average. Likable without being unforgettable.
