Prisoners is episode 3 of season 2 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1998.
For setting foot on the wrong world, SG-1 is sentenced without trial to the prison of Hadante, a hole with no way out, filled with the galaxy's worst criminals. Their only ally is Linea, a gentle old woman who keeps order among the inmates. The team escapes thanks to her, only to discover, too late, who they've just unleashed on the galaxy.
Why it matters to the mythology
Linea, the Destroyer of Worlds, will come back to haunt the series. Proof that even SG-1 can make a mistake with galactic consequences.
First appearance
The review
A fairly standard prison episode, saved by its ending. The whole plot hinges on a twist I won't spoil here, but it works all the better because the series dares to let its heroes lose: SG-1 is played from start to finish, and the credits roll on their stunned faces. That kind of moral defeat, rare on TV at the time, gives this universe its real darkness.
