Serpent's Song is episode 18 of season 2 of Stargate SG-1, first aired in 1998.
A Death Glider crashes with an unexpected passenger on board: Apophis, broken, tortured, begging for asylum. His tormentor is Sokar, the Goa'uld who inspired the Devil, and he wants his toy back. While the SGC debates the fate of its worst enemy, Sokar bombards the iris and the countdown becomes a matter of conscience: what do we owe a dying monster?
Why it matters to the mythology
Sokar enters the scene as the rising threat, and Apophis's temporary death sets up painful resurrections.
First appearance
Sokar (as a direct threat)
The review
A surprisingly mature episode: the big villain of the early days comes back as a wreck, and the series dares to show empathy without ever granting absolution. Daniel at the bedside of the man who destroyed his life, unable to hate him completely, is chamber theater in the middle of an action series. And the bombardment of the iris establishes Sokar without even showing him, proof that a well-written threat doesn't need a face. Underrated.
