Stargate: Continuum
When history gets rewritten
Time travel
By tampering with time, Ba'al erases decades of history, and a world without a Stargate is born. SG-1 must then do everything it can to restore reality. A story that plays with the very continuity of the franchise.
Where to watch (France)
As SG-1 attends the execution of the last Ba'al, the Goa'uld triggers his backup plan: from the past, he rewrites the course of time. The team wakes up in a reality where the Stargate was never discovered, where its members don't know each other and lead separate, gray lives, and where Ba'al is about to conquer a defenseless Earth. To restore history, Carter, Mitchell and Jackson have to convince a disbelieving world, survive a present that erases them one by one, and trace the time manipulation back to its source.
Why it matters to the mythology
A pure time-travel exercise that plays with the saga's continuity and brings back Jack O'Neill at long last; no lasting consequences for the main storyline, but a treat for fans.
The review
Continuum is a love letter to the fans, and you can feel it in every shot. Rather than one more adventure, the TV movie plays with the very continuity of the saga: Ba'al goes back in time, erases decades of history, and our heroes wake up in a present where the Stargate was never discovered, where they don't know each other, where each of them leads a separate, gray life. The idea is delicious and makes room for scenes the series could never have afforded, including the long-awaited return of Richard Dean Anderson as O'Neill, as good as ever, who alone is reason enough to watch. The film fully owns its status as a high-end treat: shot in the Arctic aboard a real icebreaker, ship battles, and a Ba'al more delightful than ever as the master of the time game, with Cliff Simon clearly having a blast. You could fault the script for a few shortcuts and a somewhat convenient use of time travel, but the emotion is there, especially in these heroes who have to rebuild their legend from nothing. It's a birthday present the franchise gives itself with a smile, and we unwrap it with the same joy. Light, spectacular, nostalgic: exactly what we could have hoped for.
