Tabula Rasa is episode 6 of season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2007.
One morning, Atlantis wakes up without its memory: an amnesia virus sweeps through the city, erasing memories in layers, faces first, then words. Teyla and Ronon, immune, try to herd hundreds of armed amnesiacs, while a McKay who no longer knows his own name follows sticky notes written by a self he has forgotten.
Why it matters to the mythology
A standalone episode: memory as infrastructure, and a demonstration that the city depends on just a few brains.
The review
The concept of an Alzheimer's building is exploited with a real eye for detail: McKay's notes to himself, corridors full of strangers who used to be friends, Sheppard keeping the reflexes without the reasons. The fragmented flashback structure cleverly mimics its subject's amnesia. Ronon as a shepherd of amnesiacs gets some lovely quiet scenes. No lasting consequences, but an execution well above the genre average. Very good.
