This Mortal Coil is episode 10 of season 4 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2007.
A team that recovers a little too well from a crash, instruments acting up, a city that rings hollow: the team discovers it is... a copy. Nanite duplicates created by a dissident Asuran faction, with a reconstructed Elizabeth Weir among them. In their creators' eyes, the doubles have only one use, to serve as bait, and only one choice: to die usefully.
Why it matters to the mythology
Niam's faction and the digital Weir: Elizabeth's legacy fragments into copies, and grieving the character becomes a labyrinth.
The review
A nested episode that dares existential melancholy: our heroes discover they're photocopies... and decide to act as originals anyway, all the way to sacrifice. Weir's return, even as a replica, reopens the wound with a cruel gentleness, and her final choice, to lead her people to a dignified death, is faithful to the character. The series plays with identity the way SG-1 played with time: as a philosopher disguised as a serial. Underrated and rather beautiful.
