Conversion is episode 8 of season 2 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2005.
Ellia's claws have infected Sheppard with the retrovirus, and the mutation begins: blue skin, tenfold strength, and a less and less human anger. The soldier is turning into an Iratus bug, the ancestor of the Wraith, while Beckett races after a cure that requires fresh eggs... to be harvested deep inside a cave full of creatures.
Why it matters to the mythology
The biological origin of the Wraith laid bare: Iratus bug plus human, the enemy's founding equation, demonstrated in the hero's own flesh.
The review
Sheppard's metamorphosis is worthwhile for what it reveals: beneath the cool pilot sleeps a predator, and Joe Flanigan plays the rising savagery with infectious relish, the forced kiss on Teyla marking the line that's been crossed. The mythology gains its missing link, the Iratus bug, and Beckett his finest suicide mission in the form of an egg hunt. A classic transformation episode in form, rich in substance. Solid and important.
