The Eye is episode 11 of season 1 of Stargate Atlantis, first aired in 2004.
The storm hits, the Genii hold the control room, and Sheppard picks off Kolya's soldiers one by one to take back his city. Weir bets her life on ever subtler bluffs, McKay rigs the lightning rod of the century, and the lightning, finally tamed, swells the shield just as the surge wave sweeps over the towers. Kolya escapes, and the hatred is sealed.
Why it matters to the mythology
Atlantis survives its first foretold fall, and Sheppard kills enough Genii to turn a rivalry into a lasting vendetta.
The review
The conclusion keeps every promise: the lightning channeled into the city's pylons delivers a sumptuous visual climax, and the final hand-to-hand fight between Sheppard and Kolya owns the intimate brutality of the conflict. The toll is dizzying in hindsight, some sixty Genii dead, and the series leaves that slate open instead of wiping it clean. Weir, for her part, comes out of every hostage scene stronger. The season's best two-parter, no contest.
