Trial and Error is episode 6 of season 2 of Stargate Universe, first aired in 2010.
Young is cracking: the colonel dreams on a loop of a Nakai attack that destroys the ship, whiskey in hand and a castaway's beard, and every simulation ends with everyone dead. Destiny itself is orchestrating the test: the command chair is judging its occupant, and the ship will only restart its systems if the man gets back on his feet.
Why it matters to the mythology
Destiny evaluates its commander: the series makes the ship an official character, judge and teacher of its crew.
The review
A portrait of command with a hangover: the simulation loops, ever crueler, dissect Young's guilt, Riley, TJ, the dumped prisoners, all the way to the bottom of the glass. The idea that the ship itself administers the ordeal turns psychotherapy into mythology. Louis Ferreira, once again, carries the collapse with painful truth. The final redemption stays fragile, as it should. A pivotal episode for the character.
