Hope is episode 14 of season 2 of Stargate Universe, first aired in 2010.
Chloe wakes up inhabited: Ginn, the dead woman, speaks through her mouth, soon followed by Amanda Perry, the two consciousnesses having survived in the stones' memory. The ship improvises digital housing: the two women move into Destiny's data banks. Meanwhile, TJ diagnoses the unthinkable in a patient: Lou Gehrig's disease... in a simulation of hope.
Why it matters to the mythology
Ginn and Perry resurrected as digital consciousnesses: Eli's love and Rush's love return as silicon ghosts, with all the awkward questions that entails.
The review
The series invents its own ghosts: two dead women stored in the computer, tangible to those who love them, and the happiness Eli and Rush recover has from the outset the taste of technical debt. TJ's medical subplot, healed by a deceptive simulation run by the ship, questions the line between care and manipulation. SGU at the height of its transhumanist melancholy, before the bill arrives. Gentle and venomous.
