Air (Part 2) is episode 2 of season 1 of Stargate Universe, first aired in 2009.
The air keeps leaking: Destiny's CO2 scrubbers are dead, and the ship, as if listening, drops out of FTL in front of a desert world. A team sets out to find the mineral that can save everyone's lungs, in a desert that burns through the seconds. Not everyone will come back, and those who do aren't done hating each other.
Why it matters to the mythology
The ship reveals its logic: it stops where the solutions are. The castaways learn their first rule of survival, and lose their first illusions.
The review
The second part of the pilot converts the try: the desert, filmed handheld, crushes the characters beneath a white sky, and the race for calcium carbonate has the simplicity of great emergencies, breathe or die. Leaving the priest behind in the dunes, an icy field decision, heralds a series where arithmetic beats sentiment. Rush is already lying to everyone with astonishing ease. The series' DNA is complete in three episodes.
